Anti-Bullying (Extra Credit)

The presentation on anti-bullying was very informative and brought up many interesting points about bullying. Some of the anti-bullying related topics discussed are how prevalent bullying is among children and the negative effects on children due to bullying. Bullying is not only more prevalent that people realize, but it is much more serious. A great deal of those who are bullied as children experience trauma throughout their teens and adulthood.
Bullying is so common because children often do not realize the consequences of their actions. From children to older teens, people have tendencies to gather in certain groups and bully those in other groups. There are many factors that are involved in why certain people are targeted, including physical appearance and certain personality traits. Often, those that are less physically attractive, those that are shy, and those that act differently than others, for any reason, are bullied more often.
People are beginning to realize how big of a problem that bullying is and the negative effects that result from bullying. I believe that it is important to realize how much of a problem it is so that we, as a country, can find a solution to this problem. Some things that I believe would help with the issue of bullying involve the cooperation of teachers, parents, and other adult authority figures. Especially when children are very young, when they begin to develop social skills, teachers could engage children in various activities that could teach them that some children are different, and thus, deter them from bullying. Also, parents and other adults becoming more involved in their child’s social life and mentoring them to be kind to those that are different in school can help prevent that child from becoming a bully. When children learn not to bully, they may even stand up for those being bullied.
This is an issue that is very meaningful to me because I was bullied as a child. In Equator, I looked much different than all the other children. Although I am from Equator, I do not look like it. I have blonde hair and blue eyes; whereas, everyone else in my elementary school had dark hair, dark eyes, and dark skin. Because of this, I was bullied very often.
In conclusion, bullying can be a very serious problem among children of all ages. It is extremely prevalent and can produce negative effects that last though a person’s entire lifetime. Bullying is a problem that needs to be addressed, and there are many different ways it could be addressed.
